We often associate getting fit with expensive gym memberships, but one benefit to living in the Wyndham City region is how many options there are for fitness on a budget. From swimming and social running groups to line dancing and men’s walking groups, you’ll find something to suit your fitness needs.
Swimming lessons
Swimming is a great skill to have, particularly come the warmer months. Aquapulse at Hoppers Crossing have a range of swimming lessons, from water familiarisation classes from 6 months old through to Adult swim lessons. A new Life Saving Victoria program is also being introduced, with this three week course aimed at boosting water safety knowledge and confidence for Wyndham City residents between the ages of 50 – 90.
If you can’t get to Hoppers Crossing, there are a number of pools across the city that offer adult and children swim lessons.
Social Running
The Tarneit Social Running Club holds a beginner running course for those who’ve always wanted to run but never really got there. The aim of the 12 week course is to get you better at running 5km. Open for anyone over the age of 13, and held at Wootten Road Reserve in Tarneit, this is a great way to meet new people and get fit.
The Man Walk
This is one for men of all ages and gives a great opportunity to not only walk and meet new faces, but to be involved in a positive, supportive and inclusive environment, where there are no barriers to entry. The Man Walk in Werribee is a great way for men to be able to open up and support each other and themselves. The group starts from Watton Street in Werribee every Saturday morning.
Women and Girls Fitness Sessions
If you’re hoping to get fit but want a supportive and safe environment to do so, the Women’s and Girls Fitness sessions at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre are a fantastic option. These sessions are specifically tailored towards women and girls wanting to increase their fitness, and sessions consist of strength, core, flexibility and cardio exercises delivered by a friendly female instructor. Sessions are open to those 16 and over, and are completely free to attend.
Yoga
A fantastic way to stretch and strengthen your body, a yoga session can also assist in clearing your mind of stress and anxiety. Daily yoga sessions from Live Life Get Active are run at Gillespie Ave in Werribee every morning and are designed so that everyone can attend, whether you’ve practised yoga before or not.
For those who can’t get there during the day, New Day Yoga runs online sessions that you can do from the comfort of your home, or in person on a Thursday night at The Grange Community Centre with a small fee.
Walking Basketball
If you’ve always wanted to give basketball a try or can no longer keep up with the pace of the game, Walking Basketball is a great alternative. Great for those who are older in age, returning from injury, returning to exercise postpartum or looking to enjoy basketball without the impact, Walking Basketball sessions are held weekly at Eagle Stadium in Werribee.
Mini Movers
Getting the kids into a structured form of activity early on is a good idea. Not only does it give you a small break, but it allows your children to try something new, and learn how to participate in group activities. Mini Movers is held at Little Growling Park every week, and uses different sports to increase the motor skills of children aged 3 – 7. All sessions are free and great for beginners.
