Great news for people who love the gentlemen’s game – despite a stop-start buildup, the cricket season is back on. The men’s and women’s international teams will be in action, playing games across the country for The Ashes series, the most-awaited cricket tournament in Australia. And more locally, cricket teams are looking for players both big and small.

Australians, Brits and Indians get together

Cricket is thought to have originated as a children’s game in southeast England, with its first adult match being recorded in 1611. It spread to India, South Africa and Australia in the 1800s during the colonial era.

Today, India, Australia, and England draw the most passionate support for test cricket. England and Australia played the first-ever test match, and this year’s Ashes Series marks the 145th year of the two nations competing.

In India, cricket is a religion, with hundreds of millions of people following every game the national team plays. Here at home in Melbourne, the rivalry between the three nations is understandably intense, while test cricket today is more fast-paced and fun than ever before, thanks to the explosion of T20.

Cricket in Wyndham City

Here in Wyndham, one of Australia’s fastest-growing local government areas, the opportunities to play cricket have grown along with all of its other sporting amenities.

The sporting club network is an essential part of Wyndham’s social fabric, with cricket clubs competing every Saturday and Sunday in friendly matches. Many kids love cricket, so if you’ve been thinking about signing yours up for a sport, head to Play Cricket to find the right club or centre. And here is a list of some of our local cricket clubs to get you started.

After the Game…

For a traditional post-match curry, we recommend Desi Dhaba in Tarneit – one of the best Indian restaurants in Melbourne right on our doorstep.
