Out and about in Melbourne’s west this autumn
With summer fading out and autumn setting in, there are still plenty of events happening, as well as places to enjoy the cooler days and nights in Wyndham City. Here are our top picks
Balmy evenings outdoors
The temperature might be starting to drop off, but nights are still pleasant, and there is no better way to enjoy the change of season than getting outdoors. One of our favourite ways to spend an autumn evening is at the cinemas, and one of our favourite locations is the Barefoot Cinemas in Werribee.
Held in the Victoria State Rose Garden from 2 – 19 March, bring along a picnic and a blanket (for when the sun goes down) and enjoy a movie outdoors. This year, enjoy movies such as West Side Story, Death on the Nile, and House of Gucci. For the kids, get tickets to Sing 2 and the Addams Family 2.
With a traditional candy bar, as well as plenty of food and drink options, this is a great family night out.
The LIT Festival is ending soon, and if you haven’t been down to Wyndham Park in Werribee City Centre to see this one yet, it’s a must do. With trees drenched in colour, glowing native creatures, sculptures and an interactive GloWall, LIT is great fun for all ages. Open from 8pm – 11pm nightly, and closing on the 6th March, have a picnic in the park or enjoy a tasty meal from Wedge Street Piazza before checking out this free event.
Food and drink
Did you know there is a new wine bar in Wyndham City? Lovesick Bar is located on Kenswick Street in Point Cook and has a great vibe, with a huge selection of spirits, wines, cocktails and beer. There’s also a fairly extensive food menu with shared plates, salads, sides and sweets. We are looking forward to trying the mushroom san choy bow, the baby boston style lobster rolls and the pot sticker dumplings.
Matteo’s Delicatessen is another newcomer to the area, opening the doors in 2021. Located on Pier Street in Altona, at Matteo’s you’ll find a huge range of panini, pastizzis, and cannoli, as well as grazing platters and continental grocery products. Go and grab yourself a panini and enjoy lunch in the park or sitting by the beach.
And for a relaxed evening with music and relaxed dining, be sure to visit Grazeland in Newport – a celebration of Melbourne’s food culture, with everything from Afghan kebabs to bao to a superb pizza: no one is leaving hungry.
Something for the kids
Let’s not forget events for the kids this autumn. Celebrate the postponed Children’s Week Picnic on March 20 in Werribee Park, with plenty of experiences for your children to discover, including interactive activities, face painting, obstacle course, music and a BMX tricks show. A variet
The Sunset Safari at Werribee Zoo is coming to a close on March 13, so if you have been meaning to get there, now is the time to book. Adventure onto the savannah with a guided sunset tour, enjoy African performances and dine with family and friends on a traditional African braai BBQ. Keep an eye out for the hippos, giraffe, zebra, lions, monkeys and more.
Sunset Safari helps Zoos Victoria support sister zoos across the world, including the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre.
