Choose the right paint colours for your home
Colour is back and winter is the perfect time to brighten the home. But when it comes to choosing paint colours for your home, it’s important to consider a few things so you get it right the first time.
Start by thinking about your style and space
So, how do we go about choosing the right paint colours for your home’s interior?
Firstly, take some time to consider what style you want your home to have. Do you want a bright and cheerful room, or would you prefer something more subdued? What is the room going to be used for? If it’s a child’s bedroom, you might want to go for bright colours, whereas in a home office, a colour that is more muted may be better.
Secondly, take into account what kind of effect you want your paint colour to have on the room. A darker colour often gives off a feeling of warmth or security, so it’s perfect for creating a cosy lounge room, while a brighter colour is more energetic, so great for kitchens and dining rooms.
Thirdly, while paint colours can be changed, the surfaces in your home are harder to update, so you should consider what colours would go with your benchtops and tiles. If you have nice white tiles and benchtops, you can choose almost any colour for your walls, whereas if you have dark bench tops, you might want to choose lighter colours – however this doesn’t mean you just have to go for white. You could choose light shades of blues, greens and yellows to really bring life to a room.
Apart from this, there are two really important questions you need to ask yourself – will you get sick of the colour and will it go with everything else you own? Painting a house internally is a big task, so it’s certainly not something you want to be doing every few years. On top of this, unless you are planning on purchasing all new furniture as well (which in that case leaves you open to painting your Wyndham City home whatever colour you like), choosing a colour that matches your furnishings will bring you a more cohesive look and feel.
Small rooms, bold colours
When you have a small room, particularly one that doesn’t get a lot of light, you tend to do what you can to make the room look bigger.
While we typically tend to think of whites as making a room appear bigger (which it does), a bold colour in a small room still gives you that colour pop without it being too in your face. Think about a laundry room done in bright purple or your entry in bright yellow.
Bold colours can also set the mood of your room. If you have a small room you use for reading or work, painting it a dark green brings a touch of old-worldliness and vintage.
Should I paint before I sell my home?
Often we paint our homes to our own tastes, but when it comes to painting before selling, it’s important to appeal to a wider audience. It is a great way to increase the value of your home, particularly if you have an older home or the kids have done a little damage as they were growing up.
How does a simple paint job increase the value of your home? A fresh paint in neutral colours can brighten up your home, make those smaller rooms seem larger, and show your home as a well looked after family home that will serve the buyers well for years to come. Don’t forget about the externals of your home either – you want your home to look its best inside and out when you put it on the market.
