5 ways to transform your kids’ bedrooms

The summer holidays are here and they’re the perfect time to give your kids’ bedrooms some TLC to start the new year afresh. From bringing the outdoors inside to creating a cosy reading corner, here are five easy ways to transform your kids’ bedrooms.

Go big with a feature wall

Some people think feature walls are so yesterday, but we’re here to prove them wrong. They’re such an easy way to add personality to your kids’ bedrooms. Pick your poison:

  • Wallpaper. A wallpaper feature wall is very popular in kids’ bedrooms as there are so many options available. Melbourne-based business Natty and Polly offers Australia’s largest wallpaper collection, with over 11,000 wallpapers and murals. The hardest part is deciding between designs like whimsical murals, stripes, stars or animal prints.
  • Paint. Go old school and paint your feature wall in whatever colour your child desires. Pastel pink is having a moment right now, as is navy for a moody effect.
  • Chalkboard. Oh yes, chalkboards have left the classroom and found their way into kids’ bedrooms. But it’s actually easy to DIY a chalkboard wall and your kids are bound to love being able to go wild and create their own designs on the giant canvas.

Bring the outdoors in

Natural elements are all the rage, so now is the time to bring the outdoors indoors and create a nature-inspired kid’s bedroom. Here are some fun ideas:

  • Go green. Plants may be taking over every other room in the house, but adding a plant to your kid’s bedroom has the added benefit of giving them the chance to care for it.
  • Wooden furniture. Embrace furniture with a natural wood finish that isn’t painted or heavily stained. This will give the room a stylish Scandi minimalist feel. Temple & Webster knows the brief and has a great range of wooden furniture.
  • Outdoor accents. Think outside the box when bringing the outdoors inside. Have fun with a canopy or teepee play tent, add mountain decals to the wall or add a unique animal head wall hanging from Aussie-owned Pip and Sox.

Go vertical

Bunk beds are definitely having a comeback, but the new player on the scene is loft beds. IKEA has a great selection, but the benefit of loft beds is that you can transform the space underneath to suit your child. It can be a designated play area, house extra storage, a study area with a desk or a relaxing reading nook. Visit this post for inspiration.

Create a cosy reading nook

If you have a bookworm on your hands, how about turning a corner of their room into a cosy reading nook or chillout zone? Some must-haves include a bookshelf for starters, plus only the cosiest accessories, like plush rugs, a beanbag, a large floor cushion, an armchair with cushions and/or a blanket. You will find all of this and more at Adairs in Werribee.

Shine bright

Lighting can truly transform a room, so have fun with the lighting in your kids’ bedrooms. Here are some suggestions:

  • Pendants. Pendants and chandeliers are a new trend that brings a touch of elegance to any room. Early Settler in Hoppers Crossing has a great range to choose from, which we’re certain your little princess will love.
  • Moon lamps. If you’re embracing a space theme for your budding astronaut, they definitely need a moon lamp in their life.
  • LED lights. This is another fun DIY project. Pop to Officeworks in Werribee, grab some LED light strips and place them around your ceiling or along skirting boards. This particular brand can even be controlled via Bluetooth, so they’re destined to be a hit.
