5 great days out around Wyndham City

It’s summertime, which for many of us means finding ways to entertain the family, often on a budget. Fortunately, there is plenty on offer in and around Wyndham. Take a look at our suggestions below to find ways to keep the whole family amused as the summer holidays roll on.

On the water

For lovers of water sports, the Werribee River is a great place to spend a few peaceful hours on a paddleboard or kayak. Launch off from Riverbend Historical Park, which has a signposted launch, as well as barbecues and picnic tables for relaxing afterwards. You can paddle east for about 4km before heading back.

At Werribee South, you can launch off from the boat ramp or the beach and go east towards Wyndham Harbour or west towards Point Cook. The Werribee River flows through some of the most enchanting places, presenting beautiful scenery along the way.

Spooky sightseeing

Do you like getting a little spooked? A Werribee Park Paranormal Investigation Tour can provide you with an intriguing taste of the past with its after-dark visit to the Chirnside Homestead, an old bluestone house with stables on the banks of the Werribee River.

Held on Saturday nights, you’ll be guided by paranormal investigators, fully equipped with their own set of Ghostbuster tools. Listen to eerie tales and spend three hours exploring the old homestead and coach house, which is said to be haunted – this ones for over-eighteens only.

Spend a day in Werribee Park

If you’re visiting with kids, there’s lots to do in Werribee Park. Explore the tranquil grounds, which include an amazing rose garden, restored orchards and the Wyndham Park Mansion, where you can learn more about the architecture of the late 1800s. Although there is a small entry fee to visit this heritage-listed building, once inside, there is plenty to discover. You’ll see some of the original rooms, including beautiful bedrooms and a billiards room, and afterwards you can find a shady spot outside to enjoy a picnic.

Wild things

The open range Werribee Zoo is always a great day out with kids, whether you are a Wyndham local or a visitor to the area. Listed as one of the top zoos in Australia, it has rhinos, giraffes and zebras in an open-air setting. There’s also a Sunset Safari and dinner on offer, and you can even stay the night in a glamping tent.

But that’s not where the fun ends. If you’ve never visited the amazing Wyndham Park before, it’s another great day out with kids. Take them for a walk over the treetop footbridge to access this recently renovated fun park, where older kids can tackle the flying fox and slide. There are bike and walking tracks, barbecues, outdoor exercise equipment and a water play area for smaller kids. It’s all a five-minute walk from Werribee train station, shops and cafes, so you can pick up something to eat or a coffee on your way through.

Wining and dining

Wyndham is home to some wonderful wineries that match quality restaurants to their offerings. Run by local producers, showcasing local produce and delivering high-quality service, these establishments give you the perfect end to an active day out with the family.
