Melbourne weather is always unpredictable. We are known to have all 4 seasons in one day, but let’s see what fun activities you can do during autumn this year.

1.      Moomba festival

The 69th anniversary of Moomba festival is happening Labour Day weekend – 9 to 13th of March. Explore the various free family-friendly activities during Australia’s largest community festival. This year they are doing things a little bit differently with an extra day and adjusted opening hours, so be sure to check the website before heading out! You can expect the classic Moomba parade, the funny Birdman Rally and sports competitions. Eat, drink, and enjoy rides all day long and finish off the night by watching the fireworks across the Melbourne skyline.

2.      Pick sunflowers

Just a 50min drive from Point Cook and you are surrounded by picturesque rolling hills filled with sunflowers. The Greendale Sunflower farm offers the closest pick-your-own-sunflowers to Melbourne. This family-, dog- and Instagram-friendly location opens to the public for a short period of the year, so be sure to subscribe to their notification service and get ready to experience these fields of gold.

3.      Visit Lake Tyrell

Looking for an outback adventure and ready to travel 5 hours away? Visit Lake Tyrell, Australia’s largest Salt Lake which is 120,000 years old. During the summer months, the lake will have a pink hue (if there is water in it). If the lake is dry, the salt water flats are stunning, especially at night where you can walk among the stars.  In autumn time the lake can be magical either way and is a unique stop to see the sunrise, sunset, or night sky.

4.      See the last of the Lavender

Have you heard of the Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm just 10 minutes north of Daylesford? A small fee of $5 per adult gives you access to the entire farm, where you can roam the European styled gardens, historic stone building, farm animals, and rows upon rows of lavender. The peak time to view the lavender is in January, but it is still on display during autumn as well. You might even see them harvest the lavender, smell the drying bunches, or see the distillery happening! The farm offers much more than just lavender and it certainly is a full-day experience for the whole family.

5.      Taste wine in the Grampians

We all know about the amazing wines that the Yarra Valley produces, but what about the Grampians region in Victoria? There is over 150 years of history in this region and is therefore home to some of the world’s oldest vines. The Grampians actually produces some of the best shiraz in Australia. If you have a designated driver, we recommend visiting Mount Langi Ghiran, Mountainside Wines, Seppelt, and Best’s. The last one on that list offers a self-guided cellar tour which has been awarded for best large cellar door and best tasting experience in the Grampians. Still have more energy? Hop over the Grampians Estate to experience the best small cellar door with the best food.

If you cannot find a designated driver on your own, Mountainside Wines offers chauffeur driven winery tours and multiple experiences for you to choose from without having to worry. If you really want to taste local wine, visit Shadowfax in Werribee!

6.      Experience the Rocky Horror Show

An Australian production will kick-of the global celebrations in honour of the iconic musical The Rocky Horror Show as it marks its 50th anniversary. It is the only contemporary rock musical to have been on stage that long. Seen by over 30 million people, in over 30 countries, in more than 20 languages, this musical is the boldest bash of them all. Put your hands on your hips and bring your knees in tight, before you book one of these fast-selling tickets to this time-warped performance.

7.      Celebrate Easter on a train

Spruce up a visit to the Bendigo Easter festival by going on a steam locomotive! Join Steamrail Victoria from Melbourne to Bendigo and back. Sit back in your compartment and enjoy the scenery as the classic train powers through the historic tunnels and viaduct. You can order snacks, drinks, or buy from a range of souvenirs on board.

Upon arrival in Bendigo, there is much to see and do for the whole family. Be mesmerised by the Goldfields library story telling tree, have fun on the carnival rides, watch the gala parade and be entertained by street performers. It’s a day trip to be enthralled!

8.      Have a picnic

Werribee park, Point Cook Coastal Park, or Werribee South Beach. All great locations to enjoy a picnic during those last warm days of the year. If you want to make this activity a bit more classy, you can order picnic hampers. Or check out these picnic recipes to fill up your own!

9.      Indulge in a High Tea

High teas are not as popular as they once were, but what about high wines and high beers? You can find a variety of places that offer these services, mainly on weekends. A local and luxurious place that offers high tea bookings, is the Lancemore Mansion Hotel Werribee Park. This contemporary accommodation is set among acres of beautiful gardens, has a spa, swimming pool and renowned restaurants. With Joseph’s Dining offering a high tea menu every Saturday and Sunday. If you are looking for a location closer to the city, What’s on in Melbourne did some good research regarding high tea venues.

10.  Get your game on
